Public steps only

How to close your ESPN Fantasy account

The closing flow lives inside the official ESPN Fantasy app or on the publisher's website. We outline the public steps but do not collect your account details. If you joined any paid contests, settle any pending balances before you close the account.

Closing the account is final. Any active subscriptions, league memberships, or contest entries tied to the account will end. Download any data you want to keep before closing.
Before you close

The four checks to make first

  1. Settle balances. If you have any active paid contests, withdraw or settle them before closing.
  2. Cancel subscriptions. If a subscription is tied to your account, cancel it first to avoid further charges.
  3. Download data. Some platforms allow you to export your league history, draft results, and roster transactions. Download what you want to keep.
  4. Tell your leaguemates. If you are the commissioner, transfer commissioner rights first. If you are a member, give your leaguemates a chance to find a replacement.
The closing flow

Steps in the official app

  1. 01 — Sign in on the official app or website
Open the publisher's official app or website. Verify the domain before you sign in.
  2. 02 — Open the account settings screen
From the menu, find "Account" or "Profile" or "Settings". The exact label depends on the platform.
  3. 03 — Look for "Close account" or "Delete account"
Some platforms nest this option under "Account security" or "Privacy". If you cannot find it, use the official help centre's search function for "delete account".
  4. 04 — Confirm the close
The publisher will ask you to confirm by re-entering your password or by sending a code to your registered email or phone. The confirmation step is intentional — it prevents accidental closure.
  5. 05 — Expect a confirmation email
The publisher will email you within a few minutes to confirm the closure. If you do not receive it, check your spam folder before assuming the closure did not go through.
If you cannot find the close option

Escalation paths

If the close option is not visible in the app, search the publisher's official help centre for "delete account" or "close account". Some platforms require you to use the website rather than the app to close.

If the help centre does not produce a clear path, reach the publisher through the official customer-care route. Do not share your password with anyone claiming to be able to close the account on your behalf.

Data export

How to download your league history before you close

Some platforms allow you to export your league history, draft results, and roster transactions. The export usually lives under "Account" → "Privacy" → "Download my data". Request the export before you close; if the platform offers a delay between request and download, plan around that delay.

If the platform does not offer an export, take screenshots of your league standings, your roster transactions, and your draft results. Those screenshots are the only archive of your activity that you can keep.

What happens to the leagues you ran

If you are the commissioner of any leagues, the platform will either close the league or transfer it to another manager. Read the platform's documentation for the commissioner-closure flow. Some platforms require you to transfer commissioner rights before closing your account; others close the league automatically.

What happens to the leagues you joined

Leagues you joined as a non-commissioner member will lose you as a member. The platform may replace you with an automated manager, allow the commissioner to find a replacement, or disband the league if it falls below the minimum team count. Read the league's constitution for the specific policy.

After closing

What happens to your data after the account closes

Most platforms retain your data for a grace period (typically 30 days) after the account closes, in case you change your mind. After the grace period, the data is permanently deleted. Read the publisher's privacy notice for the specific retention period.

What is retained

Most platforms retain anonymised, aggregated data (e.g. "this player was drafted in 1% of leagues") after the account closes. The aggregated data is not tied to your identity and is used to improve the product.

What is deleted

Personal data tied to your identity (name, email, payment information, league membership) is deleted when the grace period expires. League history tied to your identity (draft results, transactions, standings) is also deleted.

Reopening the account

Some platforms allow you to reopen the account within the grace period; others require you to create a new account after the grace period expires. The reopened or new account starts with an empty history; your old league memberships and draft history are not restored.

Subscriptions and recurring charges

How to find and cancel subscriptions tied to the account

If your account has a paid subscription (premium features, contest upgrades, ad-free viewing), the subscription is tied to the publisher's billing system. Closing the account does not always cancel the subscription automatically; cancel the subscription first to avoid further charges after the account closes.

Where to find subscriptions

The subscription screen usually lives under "Account" → "Subscriptions" or "Account" → "Billing". The exact label depends on the platform. The publisher's help centre has the most up-to-date navigation instructions.

How to cancel

Most subscriptions offer a "Cancel" button that takes effect at the end of the current billing period. You retain access to the subscription benefits until the period ends. Some subscriptions offer a refund for the unused portion; the refund policy is in the subscription terms.

What if the cancel button is hidden

Some platforms make the cancel button hard to find (a "dark pattern"). If you cannot find the cancel option, search the publisher's help centre for "cancel subscription" — most platforms have a documented cancellation flow.

Telling your leaguemates

How to give your league a clean transition

If you are the commissioner of any leagues, the transition matters most for the other managers. A clean transition gives your leaguemates time to find a replacement or reconfigure the league.

Transfer commissioner rights first

Most platforms allow you to transfer commissioner rights to another manager. Do this before you close your account — once the account closes, the transfer option disappears.

Give two weeks of notice

Two weeks before you close, send a message to every league you are in: "Closing my account on [date]. The new commissioner is [name]. Please coordinate any in-progress trades or waivers before then."

Settle any pending trades

If you have a pending trade or waiver claim, either accept or reject it before you close. A pending trade that processes after you close can confuse the league.

Archive any data the league wants to keep

If the league has a tradition of keeping draft results or transaction logs, take a screenshot before you close. Once the account closes, the data is permanently deleted.

If you cannot find the close option

Common reasons and how to fix them

"I cannot find the option on mobile"

Some platforms only expose the close option on the website, not in the mobile app. Open the publisher's website in a desktop browser, sign in, and look in the account settings there.

"The option is grayed out"

The close option is grayed out when you have an active paid subscription, an active paid contest, or a pending transaction. Cancel the subscription, settle the contest, and complete the pending transaction before you try again.

"The platform asks me to confirm by phone or video call"

Some platforms require a video or phone verification before closing an account that has had large transactions. Schedule the call through the official customer-care channel.

"I closed the account but I am still being charged"

If the publisher continues to charge after closure, contact them through the official customer-care channel with the closure confirmation email. They will refund any charges that should not have occurred.

The cooling-off window

Some platforms let you reopen within 30 days

Most platforms offer a cooling-off window after the close confirmation. The window is typically 7 to 30 days during which you can reopen the account without creating a new one. After the cooling-off window, the data is permanently deleted.

How to reopen

Sign in with the same credentials during the cooling-off window. The platform will offer a "Reopen account" option instead of a "Sign in" option. Confirm the reopen and your account is restored.
